Coaching Philosophy
I believe that every coach would have a set of principles that they uphold, so do I.
To me, swimming is more than just a sport. It’s a skill that can help you in alot of different aspects in life.
When I teach a group of children swimming, I try my very best to help them understand what they are doing. Through understanding then only will they have the will to learn. Swimming lessons are not just lessons whereby children sit and receive knowledge on how to do a specific stroke, just because I say this is the best way, is it really the correct way? When I explain a certain action in swimming to my student I will accompany it with reasons on why it should be done this way, and through explanation children will then understand, and through understanding comes the will to excel and remember.
When I visit a public swimming pool and my adult student would ask me, why is it that other people’s stroke is not that good, but he can still swim fast?
The answer is that, to learn how to swim is not to swim fast, but to swim slow. Why do I say that? A good swimmer with well balanced strokes and defined movement will be able to cut through the water with ease and not using much force. The slower he swims, the more he feels on his strokes. A person who powers through the water all the time and fails to feel how water works, will not be able to swim slow, because once power is taken out of the equation, swimming is not possible.
So to me, I teach swimming to both children and adult the same way. The only difference is the terms I use with adults would be more technical and the terms used for children are more understandable. The quality of stroke is what I try to put through to my students.
As a child, Learning will always be infused with fun and alot of communication. To be able to swim well at a young age will benefit a child alot because of the ability to activate certain small groups of muscle and nerve only through swimming at a young age, allowing them develop a good motor skilled body. And also learning at a young age will be also encourage children to face fears in life if they have phobic over water and water depth.
For an adult, continuous improvement of strokes is vital because as age catches up, strength and stamina will go down and this is the time where stroke quality comes in. Without much effort swimming can still be done, with efficient stroke management.
So to conclude, swimming is a life long skill. Once acquired, lots of practice has to be put into it improve stroke efficiency. For a child, not only strokes will be taught, but also building up a good character. Passing on good values is a key component in bringing up a good student. Through games, drills and communications, students will be asked to challenge themselves to improve and be strong and determined in wanting to achieve certain skilled test and thus building up their character to face up to problems and challenges as they step into the next stages of their life.
